In celebration of World Environment Day, Mulgrave Landcare invited the local community to plant trees along the drain that leads to Hemming’s Creek.
Replacing the current weeds (such as Guinea Grass) with native tree species (as we have already done at the northern end of the drain one year ago), has vastly improved the visual amenity of the area, encouraged the council to perform more regular maintenance, and provided the beginning of a wildlife corridor from the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area to Hemming’s Creek. Our recent bird survey with members from BirdLife NQ has already shown an increase in species in the area.
With funding from a Terrain nrm Community Grant, we have now planted the final connection to Hemming’s Creek. More plantings are planned next year on the other side of the drain.
